Decided to celebrate Shepard’s birthday by partying with the Normandy crew. Happy birthday, Commander!

Only if for a night

She doesn’t sleep anymore.  Not really.  

Between the never ending report filing and number crunching and tactics planning, oh—and the nightmares, sleeping seems to be more trouble than it’s worth.  

She twists her fingers into the smooth coolness of the sheets, trying to banish the vision of the burning child that seems to lurk just behind her closed eyelids. Don’t think about it, run the numbers again, go through the rosters, plan the next jump…don’t see the young skin as it crackles and pops, blackening, curling at the edges—

Behind her something shifts and a warm and heavy arm curls around her waist.  Even in sleep Kaidan’s touch is gentle, safe.  He sighs, his breath ghosting across the back of her neck and she can feel her own breathing begin to come more easily, her heartbeat begin to slow.  She allows her body to relax back, and he pulls her closer, murmuring sleepily against her shoulder.  She’d forgotten that he used to talk in his sleep.  How could she have forgotten that?

She glances at the clock beside the bed.  0330.  She give if an hour and then go check on the new data Traynor’s been working on.  Kaidan’s fingers press against her skin.  Maybe she’ll give it an hour and a half.

She doesn’t sleep anymore.  Not really.  But somehow this is enough, feeling the rhythm of his breath, the steady beat of his heart against her back, the warmth of their bodies tangled in the sheets.  This is enough.  It will give her the strength to move forward.  She will cherish every second.  

Even if it’s only for tonight.

And the only solution was to stand and fight, 
And my body was bruised and 
I was set alight,
