i think basically everyone underestimated Alistair
even the ppl who were ostensibly on his side, like Eamon
a lot of it is his own fault for obfuscating stupidity so much of the time
but he does a lot of growing up that gets missed by ppl
and I think Eamon’s basic problem WRT Alistair isn’t that he’s ~zomg so meen~ to him, it’s that he still sees him as that 10 year old kid that needs somebody to raise and guide him
not understanding how he grew and developed after he left his care, how he matured under Duncan’s mentorship and even further during the Blight through his relationship with the Warden (regardless of its nature)
he’s a goober but he’s not stupid and all he was really lacking was confidence in himself imo
and i really don’t think Eamon is some kind of machiavellian schemer
I think he’s part of the old guard of Fereldan nobility who believes things are done a Certain Way
he’s an Establishment guy
cuz it says something to me that he’s willing to overlook Alistair’s illegitimacy to keep a common born woman off the throne. I don’t think this is intentional maliciousness on his part, he genuinely feels like this is best for Ferelden to have someone of Theirin blood on the throne
which is almost worse in some respects

as my headcanon goes, I think he’s more concerned with politics post-Blight than anything
telling Alistair not to rock the boat too hard, since the kingdom is weak and they’ve only just had a civil war and the issue of succession was so fraught with controversy
don’t antagonize too much of the bannorn, don’t thumb your nose at the Chantry, don’t upend hundreds of years of tradition just bc you are young and in love
and he is right to a certain extent in terms of the amount of flailing that happens
but Alistair believes in doing the right thing even if it’s not politically expedient which is why I think he makes such a good leader.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that Eamon was trying to keep his old plan for Celene going only marrying Alistair off to her since his brother was dead
and Gisele threw a monkey wrench into all of that
as an Establishment guy I don’t think he was keen at all on elves with power and agency (which is why he kept the lie about Alistair’s parentage going imo)
Gisele was a useful figurehead in the sense that she was a symbol of heroism to inspire the kingdom, and he tolerated her as far as that went
but when she didn’t go away or quietly stay in Amaranthine there was a problem.

Alistair did do a lot of pretending to be stupid, or incompetent, or unfit for the throne, and I think a lot of that has to do with, 1. him never getting any kind of support or having someone who truly believed in him except for Duncan his entire life, and 2. him just really, really not wanting to sit on the throne, because he felt like it was easier to let someone else handle it. He didn’t think he could be a Grey Warden and a King, and he placed so much emphasis on Cailan and not being as good as him, when in reality, it was another one of those delusions Alistair had to make himself feel better; his brother was a good leader and noble, Eamon treasured and loved him, Maric did what was best for the good of the nation; and it’s all crap, imo. It’s all crap.
At the end of the day, the person who (can) believes in Alistair the most is the Warden. They stand beside him and (can) say, ‘look, Alistair is capable and strong and dedicated and he loves Ferelden and every person that calls it home, and he wasn’t sitting on the sidelines the entire war, he was out there getting shit done.”
He wasn’t wrapped up in political intrigue (of his own choosing)
He wasn’t biding his time to wait for the opportunity to be put on the throne to present itself.
He wasn’t sitting around on his ass. He was out there doing what needed to be done to end the Blight. And, as far as I’m concerned, that’s why Alistair makes the best leader, imho, because he got shit done.
And Eamon’s whole attitude towards a female Warden romancing Alistair, I just can’t deal with that. I understand it from his perspective, but still. I’m thinking of my Amell, and how much she loved him, and then just. Uuuugh.
I would’ve respected Eamon a lot more if he’d put Alistair forward to be on the throne because he actually had faith in him, instead of just him being of Theirin blood.

18. Moral Alignment. What would your character moral alignment be and why?
19. Fighting Style. Describe your Warden’s fighting style and how it improves during the Blight. Make sure to include what specializations they trained in and why they chose them.

How would you character react if they went out drinking with their companions and why? What drink would they order?
25. Food Comparison. The DA:O writers were asked in a interview to compare each companion to a type of food based on their personalities. [To see responses go onto the Dragon Age Wiki – Character’s Page – Trivia]. What food would your character be and why?
26. NPCs. Choose four random NPCs in the game – they can be anyone you want – and describe what your warden thinks of them and their relationship.

Note: Family doesn’t just have to who you’re related to. If you Warden doesn’t know their family describe their parental figures and who they were close to growing up.
